Let's hear it for the little guy. (500) Days of Summer is a sweet love story cleverly told, breaking most of the rules of film storytelling with delightful success. An insecure young greeting card writer (fresh-faced Joseph Gordon-Levitt) falls into a hopeless crush on a seemingly unattainable coworker (ever-perky Zooey Deschanel), and embarks on a quixotic quest to win her love. That's a pretty standard-issue movie setup; what makes (500) Days of Summer wonderfully unique is the filmmakers' choice to tell the story out of sequence, skipping gleefully around the 500 days of the couple's on-and-off relationship. This flash of brilliance enables the film to juxtapose the pair's happy and sad days, the days when it seemed this would last forever with the days when, unbeknownst to them, the seeds of terminal conflict were being sewn. A formula like this can get awfully confusing, but the choices of days here always make pitch-perfect sense, proving that while life happens chronologically, it is often best understood as a series of random events. In concept and execution, (500) Days of Summer is a surprisingly grown-up take on life and love from a bunch of newcomers (director Marc Webb and writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber) previously responsible for little more than some music videos and the script of the recent regrettable The Pink Panther 2. 1e1e36bf2d
